Dear Praying Friends,
“He has told you, O man, what is good; and what does the Lord require of you but to do justice, to love kindness, and to walk humbly with your God?” (Micah 6:8, NASB) This verse has taken on some real, new meanings these past days. Let me explain.

This past month my brother Keith came down with Esophagus cancer. Today he’s having his feeding tube x-rayed because it’s plugged. Last night I called to wish him a happy 51 st birthday . He said, “Well, I’m not going to starve – I can eat some apple sauce and sherbet.”

In addition, my younger brother Kerm and his wife Angie had a new baby that has been in the hospital for the past 3 weeks. They are hoping that she can come home this next weekend.

Yesterday afternoon I got a phone call from one of our Home Missions pastors who told me that he has been diagnosed with cancer on his vocal chords. His future in preaching is uncertain. It was an honor to pray with him and share the promises of the Lord that are written in the Word.

All of these situations have caused us in the office to stop and consider our well-being , as well as what is important in life. All that the Lord requires is that we “…do justice, love kindness, and walk humbly with God…” May we be faithful as we continue to seek Him.

The pastor with cancer that I’m referring to is Pastor Tom Olson from Mineral Point, WI. This morning Pastor Elden Nelson and I jumped in the SX 300 airplane and were able to spend some time with Pastor Tom and Sharon to pray with them and encourage them. We are asking that you be in prayer for him during these days. We are working with some Christian physicians to get a second opinion. Tom and Sharon are asking for wisdom as they seek the Lord as to what they should do. The Home Missions Committee will be looking at this whole matter as they meet for All Boards meetings on Monday. Please pray for Tom, Sharon, Josiah, Rebecca, and Hannah – that the Lord will cover them with His grace in these difficult days.

We had a wonderful trip this past weekend. We were at Hope Free Lutheran in Ishpeming, MI on Sunday morning. I shared “New Beginnings for Living Congregations” –based on the book of Colossians. It shares what Paul considered important principals of each local congregation. On Sunday afternoon, we met with our new group in Felch, MI, and were able to get home late Sunday night. We had a smaller group but it was a joy to share with them. We are thankful for the support of Pastor Tom Schierkolk. Our UP churches are praying and offering support for this new opportunity and we are grateful for them.

We are asking that you cover these next days in prayer. Our Home Missions Committee is meeting for a Prayer Retreat that will start Friday evening and will run through Sunday night. We will then join others at the Headquarters chapel for the installation of Pastor Elden Nelson on Sunday evening. On Monday, the Home Missions Committee will meet and will be making many decisions. On Tuesday, we will join with the rest of the boards to share what God has been doing in our midst.

Please pray for traveling mercies for all the different board members that will be traveling. Also, pray for all the decisions that come before us – we pray that the Lord’s name will be hallowed and that we will do the Lord’s work in a way that would please and honor Him.

We are grateful for the prayers we received last week for the Christian Living Conference at Hope Lutheran. It was a joy to be there and God was working in a special way. Continue to pray for all our Home Missions pastors and staff. We are grateful for the privilege of serving the Lord and our AFLC family.

Thanks for your prayers!

God’s blessings,
Paul M. Nash, Director
